Freedom apples got their name because they are “free” (disease resistant) from almost every apple disease known. If you have trouble growing apples because of apple diseases or you don’t want to spray, this is your tree! What’s more it actually tastes great!

Freedom apple trees were developed in Geneva, New York in 1958 by the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station by crossing Macoun and Antonovka. Macoun is a dessert apple known for its cold-hardiness and extremely sweet taste. But it has an issue with diseases. Antonovka is a Siberian apple that has a great disease package. So, this little baby Freedom inherited the disease resistance and cold-hardiness of Antonovka and the sweet taste and cold-hardiness of Macoun. Notice that is a double dose of cold-hardiness, so Garrett County winters are not a problem.

These babies are sweet with no bitter undertones with just enough tartness to give them balance, so kids love them. They can also be used in baking or dried. They do store well but not long term.

Pollinate with Yellow Transparent, Fuji, Golden Delicious, and Summer Rambo
