Did you know that many of the apple trees you see out there in stores and nurseries have their roots in Northern Spy? Literally. Northern Spy is used as a parent in many of the apple rootstocks because of its resistance to Wooly Aphids and cold hardiness. In fact, this little tree is so tough in colder climates that there have been documented Northern Spy trees over 100 years old still bearing.

Northern Spy is often difficult to buy because it is not a favorite of commercial growers. Why? Well, we have to be honest. It takes 10 years to start fruiting. The good news is, we put it on dwarfing rootstock (made from Northern Spy as a parent no less), so our offering will take 7 years instead of 10. This may be one you are planting for the good of your children.

Northern Spy originated in the early 1800’s in Rochester, New York. As such, it is considered an heirloom. Its flesh is creamy white, crisp, and sweet. It is known for that crisp, juicy bite and you will find it a little crispier than Nova Spy. It is extremely juicy and is great for fresh eating, cider, and apple juice. It can also be used for baking.

And a little quirk about the Northern Spy. It is a green apple, unless the sun hits it. The sun makes it turn red. So, if you have some apples that are fully shaded, they will be green with a little blush.

We only have a very few of these, so if you are interested, order it early.

Pollinate it with Nova Spy, GoldRush, Fuji, Golden Delicious, Crimson Crisp, Wolf River, and Summer Rambo
